Andre Sobel River of Life Foundation (ASRL)

Population served: Children under the age of 21 diagnosed with a catastrophic or life-threatening illness who reside in the U.S. (U.S. citizenship not required) in a single-parent family or a dual-parent family with one income               
ASRL can provide some families in financial crisis, who meet program eligibility criteria, with emergency assistance for a variety of urgent expenses.  The mission of the Foundation is to "assist with urgent expenses so that these caregivers can remain by their child's side during catastrophic illness."  Applications are usually submitted via hospital social workers.

• Works in partnership with 12 pediatric hospitals in 7 states (http://andreriveroflife.org/for-families-and-social-workers/partners/) to offer financial assistance.  When no other resources are available, social workers at the affiliated children's hospitals may contact ASRL to make a request on behalf of the patient/family.  Financial assistance can be offered for a variety of needs ranging from food, transportation, utilities and medications, not covered by insurance, to funds to protect a family from eviction or foreclosure and more
• Offers their Everyday Needs Assistance Program, which is similarly designed to assist families not affiliated with ASRL's partnership pediatric hospitals.  Contact ASRL directly to inquire about eligibility requirements for assistance that may be available

  The National Children's Cancer Society (NCCS)

CWFI fulfills wishes for children and unlike other wish-granting organizations, does not have a minimum age.  However, if the child's health allows it, the wish fulfillment is reserved until the child is old enough to fully enjoy and remember the experience.  

• Offers Wish Fulfillment Program which provides a trip to a destination of the patient's choice and includes travel arrangements, lodging, entertainment tickets, expense money and volunteer support
• Offers the Family Focus Program which provides a memorable evening out.  CWFI offers gift cards and certificates for families to enjoy a special dinner together or a trip to a local family entertainment center, theater tickets or entrance to sporting events, a circus, etc.  In addition, CWFI arranges for weekend getaways

Give an Hour is a community focused organization that provides military troops and their families with free mental health services through licensed mental health professionals who donate their time and expertise.  The participating mental health professionals offer a wide range of services including individual, marital and family therapy, substance abuse counseling, treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and counseling for individuals with traumatic brain injuries.In exchange, individuals who receive services will be given the opportunity to give an hour back in their own communities through volunteer opportunities.

The Patient Resource Cancer Guide assists to empower and prepare newly diagnosed and newly restaged cancer patients in becoming their own advocates
This guide, which may be ordered via telephone or through the Web site, provides:

• Detailed sections about treatment options and clinical trials
